At 8.30 am we waved goodbye to our families and climbed into
a new coach where we would stay 3 hours on the road to Northern Ireland.
Driving through a snow blizzard, we eventually reached Belfast where Chris, our
guide, presented the capital of Ulster and its history.
This former industrial city is well-known for its
« Murals » painted on walls of houses. We were taken aback by one of
the huge walls dividing a deprived area into 2 conflicting communities :
the Unionists (who want Ulster to stay with the UK) and the Nationalists
(fighting for a united Ireland). The opposition between the 2 poor sectors was
shown by Union Jack flags, pro-UK murals, red-blue-white edges of the pavement
on the one side, and green shops, irish flags, pro-Ireland murals on the other
side.
We also went by the
shipyard where the famous liner « Titanic » was built, which recalled
the glorious industrial past of Belfast.
After a bit of
shopping, we went to our youth hostel where we celebrated Anaïs’ and Gabriel’s
birthdays. Then we attended an unexpected concert thanks to Martin B., Côme L.,
Inès D. and Paul F. before going to bed !
Pierre E., Clément L. and Gabriel E.
